EXIM Briefing of the Sector in the First 9 Months of 2022

As the impacts of Russia-Ukraine conflicts, energy crisis, global inflation and the like continue to spill over in September, consumption in the developed countries has dropped significantly. As a result, retailers of footwear and apparel have seen their inventories pile up, and manufacturers in Southeast Asia and similar regions have seen their overseas orders freefall. Against such a backdrop, the tendency grows stronger that China's export of sewing machinery begins to decline after reaching its peak. This month China has exported sewing machinery worth of 297mn USD, slightly less than that in August, and the export quantity of industrial sewing machine has experienced negative growth for three months in a row.

In summary and by products

According to the Customs, China has exported sewing machinery worth of 2,664mn USD in the first 9 months, increasing 17.38% on a YoY basis, a lower growth rate compared with last month. Among the products, China has exported industrial sewing machines of 3.92mn sets (12.06% higher on a YoY basis), worth of 1,409mn USD (a YoY increase of 29.13%), delivering a medium growth rate; embroidery machines of 43 thousand sets (increasing 50.85%), worth of 378mn USD (growing 50.89%), a relatively high growth rate.

However, the demands for household sewing machines in the United States and Japan drop sharply, in which case, China's export volume and value of the same has respectively declined 36.64% and 34.54% in the past three quarters.

In September, China has exported sewing machinery worth of 297mn USD, growing 6.83% on a year-on-year basis but declining 3.42% compared with the previous month. The sector has maintained its export momentum though its export value dips slightly. Among them, industrial sewing machines of 397,000 sets, increasing 1.36% compared with the same period a year earlier, but falling 5.84% compared with a month earlier. Its monthly export value is 141mn USD, 0.14% higher on a YoY basis, but falling 5.81% compared with the previous month.

By export destinations:

In the first 9 month, China has seen its export to South America, Oceania, the rest of Asia grow compared with a year earlier, while its export to Europe, Africa and North America falls. By regions, China has exported sewing machinery worth of 1,801mn USD to BRI countries, increasing 26.54%, which constitutes 67.61% of the total export, and its proportion also grows 4.89% compared to a year earlier; export to RECP countries worth of 0.9bn USD, increasing 24.84%, which constitutes 33.79% of the total export, and the proportion grows 2.02% compared to the same period a year earlier; export to ASEAN countries worth of 756mn USD, growing 31.05% on a YoY basis; export to South Asian countries worth of 611mn USD, rallying 41.10%; export to Middle East worth of 245mn USD, skyrocketing 38.17%; export to EU worth of 137mn USD, dropping 16.27%; export to East Asian countries worth of 131mn USD, dipping 2.69%; export to Central Asia worth of 63mn USD, growing 0.51%.

By countries, of all the 199 export destinations of sewing machinery, nearly 60% have seen positive growth; 17 out of the top 20 export destinations saw substantial growth, 13 of them have experienced two-digit growth rate, and 9 of them have realized a growth rate higher than 30% in September.

During the same period, India is still China's largest export market of sewing machinery. China has exported the same to India worth of 354mn USD, rallying 74.00% on a year-on-year basis, which constitute 13.30% of the total export; export of sewing machinery to Vietnam is 318mn USD, increasing 16.31%, which constitute 11.94% of the total export of this sector; during the same period, China has exported sewing machinery worth of 135mn USD to Bangladesh, soaring 42.39%, which make up 5.05% of the total export. Furthermore, China's export of sewing machinery in the first 9 months to countries like Singapore, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, UAE and Myanmar have witnessed substantial growth, while that to Pakistan, South Korea, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Egypt have declined.

In September, China has exported sewing machinery worth of 71.04mn USD to ASEAN countries, growing 0.85% on a YoY basis, but falling 5.72% compared with a month earlier; export value of the same to India is 55.30mn USD, rallying 94.52% on a YoY basis, and soaring 29.31% when compared with August; export value of the same to Vietnam is 26.60mn USD, growing 17.59% on a YoY basis, but falling 6.36% when compared with August (kept declining for four months in a row). Moreover, exports to Indonesia, Brazil, Thailand, Iran, Colombia have seen double-digit growth, and exports to Uzbekistan, Peru, Argentina, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar have multiplied, while exports to USA, Bangladesh, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, Pakistan have suffered decline.

Import summaries:

According to data released by the Customs, China has imported sewing machinery worth of 663mn USD in the first 9 months, falling 9.55%. By categories, 34,300 sets of industrial sewing machines, worth of 74.85mn USD, declining 13.81% and 17.86% respectively; 80,700 sets of household sewing machines (increasing 18.97%), worth of 6.03mn USD (increasing 1.26%); 26,700 sets of pre- and post-sewing equipment (soaring 62.81%), worth of 520mn USD (falling 7.71%); spare parts worth of 58.64mn USD, falling 7.97% on a YoY basis; 357 sets of embroidery machines worth of 3.18mn USD, nose-diving 33.52% and 62.37% separately.  

In September, China has imported sewing machinery worth of 73.85mn USD, falling 10.44% compared with a year earlier, and growing 15.86% compared with a month earlier. By categories, 3,788 sets of industrial sewing machines (dipping 0.37% compared with a year earlier), worth of 5.21mn USD, plunging 48.47% compared with a year earlier, and tanking 13.69% and 42.91% respectively compared with a month earlier.
